American NHRA to begin four-lane drag racing

America NHRA four lane drag race
It had to happen sometime and it looks like 2010 is the year that serious 4-lane drag racing kicks off. In the USA where bigger always means better the zMax Dragway in North Carolina has had a special fit-out and can run four cars on the strip at once. The American National Hot Rod Association has announced that this year it will run 4-up racing for the first time at the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals in two months.
The zMax venue is like two traditional drag racing setups put side-by-side and separated by a retaining wall. At the NHRA meeting,” All four classes, Top Fuel dragsters, Funny Cars, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle will run in quadruples throughout the three days of competition, from qualifying through to finals. The new method will shorten the final elimination round to about 3.5 hours, but event organisers are expecting some exciting racing.
Who knows, it could be the future of drag racing, although there’s no word yet from Fram Autolite Dragway on whether another two lanes are going to be added to its strip.
